Essentials provide measurable detail that can be used to drive professional learning.
Here is an example of an Essential that loads on to the ‘Genuineness’ dimension.
At least 80% of the teacher’s praise statements are authentic.
Authentic praise is praise that has all of the following characteristics:
- The complimentary words are deserved.
- The voice tone of the teacher conveys approval.
- The words and tone are not excessive when considering what earned the comment.
- The posture and facial expressions of the teacher is consistent with the message.
- The words and voice tone are age appropriate.
- The complimentary words have not been over-used within the class.
Not all Dimensions are broken into Essentials. Only ones that are deemed essential – rather than simply desirable – for a teacher’s practice.
